Pre College and Summer Opportunities

VOLUNTEER AND ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES

826 NYC | 4:30-6:00 Monday - Thursday. Park Slope. Students can register to receive help on writing assignments from trained writing tutors. There are also writing classes and workshops taught by community members and professional writers.

AREAC Marine Ecology Summer Program | Summer. 10th - 12th grade. An opportunity to research ecology and assist with conservation in the New York City area. Offered for credit at Brooklyn College.

Bronx Loaf | Summer, one week in July. A free creative-writing conference for New York City students. Mr. D-A helps run this program and has helped several past BILA students apply to and attend the program.

Brooklyn Library T4 Program | Summer. Receive two-week summer training in computer programs and maintaining hardware. Coach library patrons on using technology.

Brooklyn Library Book Buddies + Shelf Organizers | Year-round. Read aloud to younger students.

Brooklyn Zoo Discovery Guide | Year round. Guide tours and student groups at the Brooklyn zoo.
Museum of the Moving Image Student Council |Tuesdays all year, some Saturdays. Help design and plan events at the Museum of Moving Image.

Parson College Scholars Program | Application due October 27th. Pre-College program for students interested in the arts. Students receive college credit and may be eligible for scholarships. Ms. Schulman can advise on the application process.

Schomburg Scholars Program | Application due September 28th. Saturdays, full year. Students learn about African-American and West Indian culture, then share this knowledge with peers. May lead to paid summer internships and scholarship opportunities.

Schomburg Curators Program | Application due September 28th. Year round. Students assist New York State Historical Society and New York Public Library staff in maintaining art and document collections. May lead to paid summer internships and scholarship opportunities.

Telluride Association Summer Scholars | Summer. Intensive six-week academic seminar focused on students of color. Students stay at universities around the country and receive writing coaching. Participants receive preferential admissions to the Telluride Association Summer Program at Cornell University and the University of Michigan. Ms. Green can advise on the application process.

Youth Leadership Council | Year-round. Sudents work with peers from around the city to develop and enact policy and events on sustainability, healthy living, access to athletic programs, and other issues.
